home>>gba log
Despite owning one I never used it much. Over the years I've played some games but never actually tried to explore the library or discover something cool.
This are the games I played before starting this:
Not a lot, and nothing particularly obscure.
Focusing on one platform it's also a good way of avoiding choice paralisis. You know, what usually happens after you spend hours setting up your emulators and roms.
So the goal here is to actually play some new games and learn a bit more about the GBA. After five games I'll write some thoughts about things so far.
I was not familiar with post-Naughty Dog Crash Bandicoot. This is ok. It's an alright platformer. Controls well and looks good but it's very short. It does have the usual time trial and hidden gems and crystals stuff.
It also has the running towards the camera levels which... I get it, it's a Crash Bandicoot game. But also you shouldn't have. Those levels were never good on any Crash game.
So it's not as good as the three Naughty Dog games but it's not bad.
This has all the cool platforming and terrible shooting one would expect from a Tomb Raider game, but from a top down perspective.
It's not a very good game but it succeeds in being an interesting adaptation of Tomb Raider to the platform. It's very short and doesn't have any secrets or collectibles.
It's not a completely bad game. I just wish it had a little bit more stuff to do.
Pretty cool version of the game.
Liked the variety of attacks available and how easy they are to perform. The back elbow went from the most powerful move in video game to just an alright attack, though.
It also can't be a Double Dragon game without annoying platforming sections. But they're not too bad here.
It's a bit unfair at times and it's easy to lose a lot of lives on some sections but it's a cool game overall.
So, one of my goals in life is to never become an annoying old man whining about things being better when I was young. But some of the changes here are testing me.
The new look of the underground and desert areas is rather ugly. And Bowser is harder to beat when you can't just duck to avoid damage.
Also, I don't really care for the more talkative version of Mario. He was already annoying in Mario vs. Donkey Kong but it feels even worse here.
Still, it is Super Mario Bros. 3. It is an excellent video game. E-levels are odd but they're cool for the most part.
And Mario Bros. is still a bad game and it's weird how they kept including it in these Mario Advance collections.
This has too many annoying things to be good. Castle is not very exciting, cards' drop rate is way too low, the Dracula fight is kinda bad, and the one against Death is very easy.
But it's not all bad, and definitely not as bad as some people say. Music is good and it looks good. Movements takes some getting used to but it feels alright.
Not as good as the previous entry, but following Symphony of the Night couldn't have been easy.
Skeleton Athlete is awesome, though.
I'm having some trouble finding games that interest me. A significant portion of the library seems to be licensed games, and those are usually pretty bad. Now, I'm not one to turn away a bad game but it has to have something interesting. Obviously, it's still too early to judge the console.
I've enjoyed the games I've played so far. Favorite one is Double Dragon Advance. None of them is amazing but, as far as styles and genres, they're kind of what I expected from the system.
I'll try to pick some weirder stuff for the next five but I also don't want to force myself to play something just because it's obscure. I want to try some of the Mega Man games at some point.
